Caragua Baptist Seminary
All instructors, including both faculty and lecturers, have pastoral experience in local churches and possess theological degrees from evangelical seminaries in the U.S. Faculty possess a terminal degree and lecturers have completed a Doctor of Ministry (D Min).
Faculty can provide instruction for all the Seminary’s courses including the four introductory courses and the eight masters courses. Lecturers instruct one or more of the four introductory courses. Typically, faculty and lecturers are able instruction in their area of specialty.
Instructors enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Seminary that outlines expectations and commitments of the instructors and the Seminary. The Seminary is a missionary work and all instructors are expected to provide funds for their airfare to Brazil. The Seminary, through our support network in Brazil (Team Brazil) provides in-country support including transportation, room and board arrangements, interpreters and in-county assistance to and from the appropriate airport.
Derek O. Coleman Jr., Ph.D.
President, Caragua Baptist Seminary
Faculty - Systematic Theology
Dr. Coleman has a B.S. Degree from Southern Illinois University, a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Graham School of Missions, Evangelism, and Church Growth at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Coleman was also a U.S. Navy instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Units in Ballston Spa, NY and Charleston, SC.
Dr. Coleman is currently senior pastor Gardenside Baptist Church, Lexington, KY. He has ministered in eight different churches as senior pastor or in missions or education ministry positions. He has also served as Adjunct Professor in two seminaries instructing undergraduate and graduate courses in evangelism, missions, and church growth. Dr. Coleman is President and Academic and Instructional Coordinator for Caraguá Baptist Seminary.
Raymond Edge, Ph.D.
Faculty - Old Testament
Dr. Edge is Adjunct Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Southwest Theological Seminary in Austin Texas and an active researcher of the Dead Sea Scrolls conducting lectures in the U.S. and Brazil. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Language and Culture-Hebrew Studies from the University of Texas and a Masters of Arts in Biblical Hebrew Language from Criswell College. Dr. Edge also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Old Testament and History of the Nation of Israel from The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. Dr. Edge is currently senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Bastrop TX, USA.
Terry Leap, Ph. D.
Faculty - Evangelism, Apologetics
Dr. Terry Leap obtained Bachelor of Arts degrees from Temple Baptist College and Northern Kentucky University and a Masters of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Dr. Terry Leap currently serves as pastor of the Williamstown Baptist Church in Kentucky, USA and as adjunct instructor at Northern Kentucky University. His specialty interests include Christian evangelism, apologetics, and world religions.
Dr. Gregory L. Waltermire, Ph.D.
Faculty - Church History
Dr. Waltemire holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education- Policy Studies and Evaluation from the University of Kentucky, and a Master of Arts from Morehead State University in Adult and Higher Education-Counseling. Dr. Waltermire also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Ministry – Communications from Lexington Baptist College and a Master of Arts in Christian Education-Teaching and Leadership from Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, KY, USA. Dr. Waltermire has pastored two churches and currently is at Heritage Baptist Church, Lexington, KY, USA, were he has pastored for 17 years.
Chris Dortch, D. Min.
Lecturer - New Testament
Dr. Chris Dortch has multiple degrees from Liberty University and Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary where he graduated with a Doctor of Ministry in 2014. Dr. Dortch is a Southern Baptist pastor and has been serving in ministry since 1993. He currently serves as the Lead Pastor of First Baptist Church of Mount Sterling, Kentucky. He also serves as a Church Revitalization Consultant and serves on the Mission Board of the Kentucky Baptist Convention.
Steven Scherer, D. Min.
Lecturer - New Testament
Dr. Steven Scherer is a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, earning a Master of Divinity (2008) and a Doctor of Ministry in Church Revitalization (2018). He currently serves as the senior pastor of Central Baptist Church in Paris, Kentucky. Dr. Scherer serves in various capacities with the Central Kentucky Network of Baptists and the Kentucky Baptist Convention.
